How to Pick the Right Colour for Your Garage Door

24 November 2016

With so many choices available, it’s hard to know where to start when it comes to picking a colour for your garage door. And given your garage door usually takes up around 70% of the front of your house, it’s a pretty important decision as well.

A lot of the decision about colour will depend on the kind of door you choose — whether it’s aluminium, timber or steel; solid, opaque or slatted. And this choice very much depends on the kind of house you live in and your personal style.

It’s definitely a good idea to talk to an expert before making any decisions about a garage door, and you should also think about how you plan to use your garage as well. If you want to include a workshop, for example, you might want a slatted or opaque door, to allow some natural light through. Or, if your garage is first and foremost a secure storage space, a solid timber or steel door is probably the best option.

Once you’ve decided on what kind of door you want, it’s time to start thinking about the colour. A guiding principle is that it should complement the colour of your home, but this isn’t always the case. Some architect-designed houses use the garage door as a counter-point to the rest of the building; a bright red garage door, for example, or a striking golden timber finish.

And there’s nothing stopping you thinking outside the box if that’s what you want. Generally, however, you want your garage door to fit in rather than dominate the appearance of your house, picking up the colour of your window trim or matching tonally with your driveway and landscaping.

At Best Doors, our comprehensive range of garage doors also means you have a great selection of colours to choose from, including the ColorbondTM palette and Timber CoatTM for our B&D and Gliderol doors, and an array of stunning stains for our Danmar timber doors. And our range of Selections designer doors gives you a whole heap of options in terms of colour or tint, including aluminium slats that look like timber with no need for painting or staining.
